According to a ZDNet investigation, hackers managed to steal $22 mln from users of the popular Bitcoin wallet Electrum. Wallet users have been forced to install fake software updates that are triggered by popup messages. Right after downloading the file, users discovered that their funds had been stolen.

This method of stealing cryptocurrency is quite popular. In 2018, criminals used a similar approach to steal more than $700,000 from Electrum wallet users. A new investigation by ZDNet showed that this scheme persisted throughout 2019 and 2020.

According to ZDNet, the Electrum team has taken steps to prevent this type of attack. However, users working with older versions of the application still run the risk of losing their funds.
