Bitcoin still remains a mystery to many ordinary people, possesses an aura of secrets, and makes its apologists look like people of a select circle. However, almost any film about cryptocurrency — artistic or documentary — can contribute to the explanation of its phenomenon and popularity. BNT analyzed the movies about cryptocurrency and made a list of the most interesting, briefly describing each of these crypto-related movies.

Attention is paid to the financial system and the role of cryptocurrency in it. This is an interesting story about the future of digital money in the global economy. The film starred one of the crypto apologists — the eccentric Roger Ver, which makes watching even more enjoyable.

Title: The Bitcoin Phenomenon

Year: 2014
Duration: 34 min.
Genre: Documentary
IMDb: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt4250314

Who can tell about the first world’s cryptocurrency better than those who participated in its creation? Of course, it’s not Satoshi Nakamoto who plays the main role here, but the list of participants in this documentary is quite impressive: Gavin Andresen, who has been participating in the development of Bitcoin for 10 years, and Eric Vurhes are the most notable among the others. There is no breathtaking ending or special effects in the movie, the entire half hour is a cutting from interviews, which is difficult to stop watching though. The film has been five years old, but after a while, it is only more interesting to watch it, because, looking back, it becomes clearer that the main characters were right in many ways.

Title: Trust Disrupted: Bitcoin and the Blockchain

The film is notable primarily because its protagonist is the New York Times columnist and author of the famous book about Bitcoin called "Digital Gold", Nathaniel Popper. In each series, Popper, along with developers, scientists, crypto enthusiasts, and other Bitcoin popularizers, talks about the future of the financial system and the place of cryptocurrency in it. Much attention is paid to mining and its potential. In the film, Gavin Andresen, Vitalik Buterin, Charlie Cooper, and others share their views and predictions.

Title: Bitcoin: The End Of Money As We Know It

Year: 2015
Duration: 60 min.
Genre: Documentary
IMDb: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt4654844

This Torsten Hoffman’s film reveals what bitcoin is for, what problems it solves and what role it plays in the financial system. The movie has a lot of thought about politics, economics, money, and trade. It lasts about an hour, but it’s easy to watch because it’s not only a montage from an interview. There are some other moments and shots that create some sort of plot.

Title: Life on Bitcoin

Genre: Documentary
IMDb: www.imdb.com/title/tt3910512

This is another documentary, this time lasting an hour and a half. The film shows the life of a young couple who have set a goal: to live for three months, paying only with cryptocurrency. There is no yet another description of Bitcoin, blockchain and everything connected with it in this show. But it is spectacular and dynamic, as befits the American thriller. An FBI agent investigates financial frauds and finds traces of the world's premier cryptocurrency. The role of the agent is played by the star of "The Hobbit" and "Sherlock" Martin Freeman.

Title: Bitcoin Heist

Year: 2016
Duration: 110 min.
Genre: artistic
IMDb: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt4911780

This one is quite unusual because it is a Vietnamese action movie. Films from the country of Ho Chi Minh are rarely high-quality, have a large budget or box office, and in general, are usually not known to anyone. Now, when there are not so many movies about cryptocurrencies, the “Bitcoin Heist” manages to gain some attention. The plot is built around a hacker named Ghost, who created problems for the authorities and is being chased by Interpol. Recommended for the fans of everything with the prefix "cyber".
