Anonymous takes on Elon Musk over Bitcoin tweets
In February, electric automaker Tesla added $1.5 billion worth of Bitcoin to their balance sheet and the company later also started accepting BTC as a means of payment for their vehicles. However, it didn’t take long for Tesla to suspend this new payment option, citing concerns that Bitcoin mining produces too many carbon emissions.
With every announcement, the price of bitcoin reacted accordingly, making Tesla CEO Elon Musk one of the biggest drivers of Bitcoin price movements in recent months. On June 3, for example, Musk posted a tweet that suggested he is no longer invested in Bitcoin and consequently, the price of the digital asset tumbled by 5%.
That hasn’t gone unnoticed by the Anonymous, a group of hacker activists, who have posted a video with the title “Message to Elon Musk” on their YouTube channel on 5th of June, 2021. The video is recorded in the signature Anonymous Legion style, although @YourAnonNews, the most popular Twitter account associated with Anonymous, says they did not make the video.
@YourAnonCentral, another widely followed Anonymous Twitter account, stated that the video is from the Anonymous group, and published a blog post accompanying the video. The introduction of the blog post reads:
“The hacker group Anonymous has released a new video challenging the infamous billionaire Elon Musk after he crashed the bitcoin stocks. Anonymous wasted no time in exposing the controversial billionaire.”
The video contains multiple accusations towards Tesla and Elon Musk, presumably all drawn from various media reports over the years and is concluding with a warning about Musk’s viral Twitter posts about bitcoin, which are allegedly manipulating the crypto market.
“It seems that the games you have played with the crypto markets have destroyed many lives, clearly showing disregard for the average working person.”
Anonymous continued by saying that hardworking people have seen their dreams liquidated by “public temper tantrums” from Musk, and concludes with a more ominous statement:
“You may think you are the smartest person in the room, but now you have met your match. We are Anonymous. We are legion. Expect us.”
It is no secret that Elon gained a lot of disapproval because of his Bitcoin and Dogecoin posts on Twitter. Regardless of what Anonymous thinks of Musk’s antics, the fact that a single entity can shake the crypto market solely with posts on Twitter shows that the asset class is still in its relatively early stages.
