Ledger To Add Support For Cardano (ADA)

The hardware wallet manufacturer, Ledger, will be adding support to Cardano in the next firmware update. The information was released by Cardano in a blog post a few days ago. At the same time, Ledger shared the information on Twitter. Cardano supporters were waiting for this update. The new version has also some security enhancements.

Ledger to Add Cardano Support in January

The Ledger Nano S firmware will be receiving a new update in early January 2019. According to a blog post released by Ledger, the new Ledger Nano S firmware 1.5 will include new cryptographic algorithms, security improvements, and additional features. The main intention behind is release is to become a more flexible platform and supporting new assets the company is able to offer services to new individuals around the world.

With this new upgrade, it would be possible for developers to add their favorite virtual currencies. Although there are many assets supporter, not all the tokens in the market have been added.

The company wrote on the matter:

“The upgrades included in this update will provide more possibilities for third party developers to bring support for their favourite crypto asset by adding several specific cryptographic algorithms which were previously missing.”

One of the most interesting things is that the upgrade will include new derivation schemes. This is related to Bip32-ed25519 enabling Cardano support and new Tezos derivation paths. Furthermore, there will be major improvements in security. Ledger informs that the Donjon security team has been attacking the Ledger Nano S evaluating its software stack.

Ledger has redesigned the arithmetic architecture, improved MCU genuine check, and it has improved the PIN code implementation. This would allow users to be protected against the hardest attacks ever. Moreover, the 1.5 firmware has been fully evaluated against the CSPN certification (First Level Security Certification). This is a certification issued by ANSSI, the French National Security Agency.

Although this has not yet been announced, the company will be releasing the necessary information as soon as the CSPN certification of the Ledger Nano S is issued by the agency.

Cardano (ADA) is one of the largest virtual currencies in the market. Created by Charles Hoskinson, ADA is the 11th largest virtual currency. It has a market capitalization of $1.15 billion and each coin can be purchased for $0.4429 according to CoinMarketCap.
