Crédit Mutuel Arkéa hit by cyberattack enabling fraudulent transactions, some funds potentially converted to crypto
Crédit Mutuel Arkéa, the French cooperative banking group, disclosed today that it suffered a cyberattack that enabled fraudulent transfers from its systems, forcing a temporary suspension of certain operations. The bank said the incident had been contained and was under control as of November 4, with services gradually resuming after security checks and additional protective measures were put in place.
The attack exploited a vulnerability in a service provider’s platform, giving hackers access to the banking group’s own account and allowing them to initiate unauthorized transfers to other financial institutions. The stolen funds could then potentially have been converted into crypto assets through specialized platforms, the bank said.
Crédit Mutuel Arkéa declined to confirm widely reported figures of approximately €118.0 million ($133.0 million) in stolen funds, stating only that the number reflected the approximate scale of the incident. A portion of the money has been frozen, and additional recovery efforts are underway as the bank works to determine final losses. The group said the amounts involved would not threaten its overall financial strength or stability.
