The suspects then moved about 10.4 Bitcoin to a wallet that investigators haven’t been able to link to anyone.
Based on reports, the victim was later driven to a remote forest and left with his hands bound, with his total losses exceeding 84 million rubles.
Five Suspects Arrested Across Russia
Authorities eventually tracked down five suspects and detained them in several Russian cities, including Yaroslavl, Yekaterinburg, St. Petersburg, and Tver. Russian police say investigators seized cash, phones, bank and SIM cards, GPS trackers, and other potential evidence.
The authorities in Russia are charging the suspects with kidnapping and high-value robbery, while also looking into whether they might be connected to other similar crimes.
Because the case is still moving through the legal system, none of these allegations have been proven in a final court ruling yet.

A Worldwide Threat to Cryptocurrency Holders
The case brings attention to the rising threat of physical attacks on crypto holders, particularly those whose social media activity may reveal their wealth.
An August 6 report from the blockchain analytics firm Chainalysis revealed that violent real-world attacks resulted in over $30 million worth of stolen crypto worldwide in just the first half of 2026.
The company warned that total losses for the year are on track to beat 2025, when criminals made off with roughly $58 million through similar physical attacks.
As such, for crypto owners, keeping quiet about personal finances and locking down private details online are of utmost importance.
