Brazilian crypto exchange Mercado Bitcoin said it will cover a $40 million loss from Monday’s hack and expects customers to suffer no losses.
The attack drained funds from its hot wallets across at least 10 blockchains, leading Mercado Bitcoin to temporarily suspend access to its platform as a precaution.
While security researchers initially linked the losses to over $40 million, Mercado Bitcoin said around $38 million were lost and that $11 million have been frozen.with the help of Tether, Circle, and Chainalysis.
The exchange said no customer data leaked and that its teams were investigating, tracing the assets and coordinating with authorities.
The breach came days after hackers stole more than $6 billion from Binance, which reopened withdrawals Sunday. The FBI attributed that attack to North Korea’s TraderTraitor group in the largest security breach in crypto history.
