CertiK is moving deeper into sovereign digital finance after partnering with the National Bank of the Kyrgyz Republic (NBKR) to strengthen the security and resilience of the country’s digital som. The partnership places CertiK within the central bank’s broader digital-asset and blockchain security framework as Kyrgyzstan develops its central bank digital currency (CBDC) infrastructure.

CertiK to support digital som security

Web3 security firm CertiK has inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Kyrgyzstan’s apex bank, establishing a long-term partnership on Digital Som security. The move will see CertiK provide its security infrastructure for Digital Som, the Kyrgyz Republic’s attempt at rolling out a CBDC.

The NBKR disclosed that its intention with the MoU is to introduce security expertise into its CBDC offering “rather than retrofitting it later, Furthermore, the MoU will extend to Kyrgyzstan’s broader digital asset ecosystem as the central bank races to establish guardrails for the emerging sector.

“This engagement is a framework for sustained collaboration between a sovereign central bank and a security-focused organization, at a moment when CBDCs and digital asset oversight are becoming core infrastructural priorities rather than experimental side projects.

According to the MoU, CertiK will provide the NBKR with its blockchain and digital asset security expertise. The central bank will explore the deployment of CertiK’s Supervision and Compliance solutions to improve risk monitoring and regulatory oversight.

Furthermore, CertiK will offer regulatory advisory services to the NBKR, particularly in the areas of AML/CFT, digital asset custody, and licensing requirements for service providers. Representatives of the NBKR added that the MoU will allow the apex bank to build technical and regulatory capacity over time.

Building on a long streak of regulatory experience

The latest partnership with the NBKR is not CertiK’s first collaboration with financial regulators. The nine-year-old Web 3 security firm has previously provided technical advisory support to US regulators.

Furthermore, CertiK has responded to several regulatory consultations from the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS), providing its security expertise on a range of digital asset matters. CertiK has lent its expertise to regulators in South America, Asia, and Europe, contributing to the design of regulatory playbooks.

Meanwhile, Kyrgyzstan has been making a strong push into digital assets, launching a national stablecoin back in 2025. The country has since taken the lead for digital assets in Central Asia with a clear and enforceable legal framework, setting the pace for the rest of its peers.

Kyrgyzstan is now racing to begin real-world testing of its digital som ahead of mainstream launch in 2027. Elsewhere, China’s digital yuan has gathered significant steam given its first-mover advantage while the EU’s digital euro is also making keen progress.
