Losses from cryptocurrency-related hacks surged to $210.3 million in July, a 177% increase from the $75.87 million reported in June, according to the latest industry data. The jump, spread across 30 separate incidents, underscores the persistent security challenges facing the digital asset ecosystem despite ongoing improvements in protocol defenses.
Key Incidents Driving the Spike
The month’s losses were dominated by a handful of high-profile breaches, with the top five incidents accounting for over $150 million of the total. The largest single event was the Coldcard Wallet compromise, which resulted in approximately $70 million in losses. This incident, the third-largest of the year, highlighted vulnerabilities in hardware wallet security, a sector previously considered among the most robust.
Other major attacks included exploits on the Arbitrum-based protocol AFX and the decentralized derivatives platform Ostium, each losing around $24 million. The Bonk memecoin-related system lost $21.2 million, while the Wanchain Bridge suffered a $13 million cross-chain attack. These incidents reflect a broader trend of attackers targeting cross-chain bridges and DeFi protocols, which often hold large pools of liquidity.
