FBI Wants to Track the Activity of Most Liquid Cryptocurrencies

The FBI has just published a request for the supply of software to track the illegal use of cryptocurrencies.

The agency has explained it "needs modern tracking and analysis tools that can keep up with the fast-moving and ever-changing technologies often used by illegal actors to avoid detection by law enforcement."

According to the announcement made by the agency, the software must enable monitoring of cryptocurrencies that account for 95% of the market capitalization (according to CoinMarketCap). Separately, the document lists "Bitcoin, Bitcoin Cash, Litecoin, Ethereum and all ERC-20 tokens" as targets.

Law enforcement agencies need to have tools to be able to obtain "transaction-specific cryptographic information," as well as geo-referencing TOR servers and attribution to associated IP addresses.

According to the request, the FBI is set to conclude a contract with a software vendor as of March 25, 2022 with an annual renewal option for the next four years.
