Solana blockchain network often touted as the “Ethereum-killer” goes down again for the third time in six months in yet another distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack. The downtime started at around two o’clock on the morning of January 4 and went up again at around seven o’clock (UTC+8), the same day.
Solana Suffers Another DDoS Attack
Blockchain journalist Colin Wuu reported the news on Twitter based on the referenced users of Solana’s official Telegram community. He added that the network is currently up and running after five hours of downtime.
“Solana went down again at two o'clock in the morning (UTC+8) on January 4th. According to users of the official Telegram community, the attacker is suspected of using spam to conduct a DDoS attack, ” adding “It was fixed after 7 o'clock (UTC+8) and returned to normal.”
The hackers apparently used spam to conduct the DDoS attack. A DDoS attack works by clogging the network by sending multiple requests to the attacked web resource and exceeding the platform’s capacity to handle multiple requests and preventing the platform from functioning properly.
While Solana Foundation has not publicly confirmed the attack at the time of writing, this is the third incident in three months, the network has suffered an outage.
A previous DDoS attack was reported in December. However, it was disputed by Solana co-founder Raj Gokal who claimed that the NFT game SolChicks was responsible for the heavy congestion not for a DDoS attack. Similarly, in September 2021, the blockchain network suffered a 17-hour outage when Solana validators were prepping for a news release on the network.
