German authorities have seized 50,000 Bitcoin (BTC) tokens worth $2.17 billion, in what is believed to be the country's largest cryptocurrency seizure, according to a statement released on Tuesday.
Dresden city police said, Th that is the largest seizure of Bitcoin by law enforcement in the Federal Republic of Germany to date.
The operation was carried out with the cooperation of the Federal Criminal Service (BKA), the FBI and a Munich-based company for forensic IT expertise.
The police reported more, that it is investigating two men, aged 40 and 37, who are suspected of running a pirate website until the end of 2013. Authorities say the men bought BTC with money they earned from the portal.
Seized BTC were obtained by voluntary transfer by the suspects to official wallets provided by the BKA. This development marks a significant move in the fight against illegal activities in the cryptocurrency space.
