Bitcoin Ordinals marketplace Ordswap has lost control of its official domain and has been forced to shut it down.

While users often become the target of phishing attacks on social media, bad actors have gone a step further and taken control of the official website of a Web3 project.

Ordswap Shifts Blame onto Netlify

On Oct. 9, the Ordswap team alerted users that they had lost control of the official domain. The team wrote on X (Twitter):

“Do not connect to Ordswap domain. We are not currently in control of domain.”

Some users shared that the attackers tried to drain users’ funds after they connected their MetaMask wallet.

Meanwhile, the Ordinals marketplace pointed the finger of blame at the website development and deployment platform Netlify. Ordswap posted:

“The issue appears to be with Netlify, but we are still working through it.”

Ordswap informed users that they had taken down the website, but claimed there were no compromises, except for one user who connected their MetaMask to the drainer website. Ordswap wrote:

“We had the site taken down. We haven’t seen anything compromised other than one user that connected their Metamask. Will have source published to GitHub for MetaMask users to get their key shortly if they have not already.”

It is worth mentioning that the website now redirects the users to relayx.io, one of the competitors of Ordswap. Google displays the following warning message when users try to visit the Ordswap website:

“This server could not prove that it is ordswap.io; its security certificate is from relayx.io. This may be caused by a misconfiguration or an attacker intercepting your connection.”
