On a recent Saturday, the social media profile belonging to Vitalik Buterin, the creator of Ethereum, experienced an unfortunate security breach.
An unknown individual with malicious intentions took control of Buterin’s account and used it to share a deceptive link designed to deceive users. Regrettably, a number of unsuspecting individuals fell victim to this ruse, resulting in the loss of valuable NFTs.
The scam enticed its victims with the promise of creating a special ConsenSys NFT, but once they confirmed a transaction on the fraudulent website, their digital wallets were swiftly emptied.
According to Etherscan, the perpetrator’s wallet currently holds assets valued at over $390,000. Notably, at one point in time, as reported by cryptocurrency investigator ZachXBT, the hacker had accumulated at least $691,000 in stolen assets.
Among the items seized by the hacker was a significant piece of NFT history – the first Larva Labs Crypto Punk ever acquired by a general public member, as confirmed by user quit.

For context, I would like to point out that the highest bid for a Crypto Punk on the NFT marketplace, known as Blur, currently stands at 45 ETH, which is approximately equivalent to $73,500.
After that, the offending post was removed, and Vitalik Buterin has been kicked off posting on the platform since the incident happened. The exact method by which the attacker gained access to the account remains shrouded in mystery.
