Bitcoin.org, one of the oldest Bitcoin informational websites that were registered by Satoshi Nakamoto and Martti Malmi, has been hacked yet again for promoting fake Bitcoin giveaways.

Bitcoin.org Site Appears to be Hacked

Upon visiting the Bitcoin.org site, users are greeted with a pop-up message that asks for sending money to a bitcoin wallet in the promise of receiving the amount in double and be sent back.

Such methods are usually seen in typical crypto giveaway scams that were rampant on Twitter usually initiated by imposters of influential accounts, including that of Vitalik Buterin and Elon Musk. In the meantime, the victims receive nothing in return and lose the crypto they sent.

The message says only the first 10,000 users can take advantage of the offer, which includes a QR code for the wallet as well as its address. All other site functionality is currently limited as users as the current homepage does not allow clicking into any other pages such as the PDF version of the Bitcoin white paper. For instance, the direct URL for the Bitcoin white paper on Bitcoin.org shows a "404 Not Found."

At the time of writing, the giveaway scam’s address has received over $17,700 in small transactions, according to bitcoin explorer blockchain.com.

Bitcoin.org Isn't Affiliated to Bitcoin Foundation

Bitcoin.org is an open-source project that aims to support Bitcoin development. While the site isn’t affiliated with the Bitcoin Foundation, it is often the first result on search engines when looking for “Bitcoin.” The pop-up message which appears on the website claims the giveaway that comes amid the Bitcoin Foundation is “giving back to the community,” which is not true.

In June, Craig Wright, the founder of Bitcoin SV won a ruling in his favor from a court in the United Kingdom that forbade the site from hosting the original Bitcoin whitepaper. Soon after the court ruling, Bitcoin.org fell victim to a denial of service attack.
