Bitcoin's (BTC) mining difficulty fell 10.09% at block 953,568, the second-biggest drop this year, reflecting a slump in the token's price in June that pushed cost-pressured miners offline and slowed block production.
Miner margins hit
The adjustment was the 11th-largest downward move in Bitcoin's history, with difficulty falling from 138.96 trillion to 124.93 trillion on the heels of a roughly 15% drop in bitcoin's price. Galaxy Research, the research arm of Galaxy Digital, said in a 14 Jun post that the slump "squeezed miner margins."
Difficulty is a ratio that measures how much harder it is to mine a block than at Bitcoin's inception in 2009, with the network resetting it every 2,016 blocks to keep average block times near 10 minutes.
The latest epoch ran 15.6 days against the 14-day target, as the loss of mining capacity slowed block production over the two-week window. The protocol then reset the difficulty to a lower level. Each unit of active hashrate, the computing power miners contribute to the network, now earns roughly 11% more bitcoin than before the adjustment.
Pivot to AI
Not all offline hashrate is returning, as some operators are redirecting power capacity to artificial intelligence (AI) and high-performance computing (HPC) workloads. Publicly listed miners are powering down rigs and slowing fleet growth to convert sites for AI and HPC contracts, a shift TheEnergyMag said on 13 Jun can "remove bitcoin hashrate even when the underlying power capacity remains in use."
The publication also flagged a summer peak-curtailment programme on the Texas grid, run by ERCOT, that pushes miners offline, resulting in temporary hashrate loss.
The clearest pivot case is Keel Infrastructure, formerly Bitfarms, which on 9 Jun raised $458mn through a convertible senior notes offering to expand into AI and HPC hosting. Hashrate Index, the Luxor-run mining data platform, projects the next adjustment around 27 Jun at roughly -0.8%, a flat read suggesting the offline capacity has stabilized rather than continuing to contract.
