On Friday, Oct. 25, 2024, Bitcoin’s network hashrate climbed to a new all-time high, reaching 736.81 exahash per second (EH/s)—a milestone unmatched in the network’s history.

Bitcoin’s Hashrate Hits Historic High — How Close Are We to the Zettahash Era?

Bitcoin’s computing power has hit new heights, with over 67 EH/s added to the network in just nine days. The record-breaking 736.81 EH/s, achieved on Friday evening, brings Bitcoin a great deal closer to the anticipated zettahash era. In simple terms, one zettahash per second (ZH/s) is a colossal 1,000 EH/s, meaning this 736.81 EH/s peak is now 0.73681 ZH/s.

Back in March 2023, Sam Wouters, head of marketing and content at the bitcoin firm River, predicted that the zettahash milestone might arrive by 2025. At that point, the hashrate had reached 400 EH/s, and he highlighted that at “the current growth rate in 2023, we’d reach a zettahash by the end of 2025.” The hashrate seems to be tracking Wouters’ prediction perfectly.

Just three months ago, on July 25, 2024, the hashrate was sitting at 677 EH/s, and since then, it’s been anything but steady, with plenty of ups and downs. Averaging out, the network has expanded by 0.66 EH/s per day over the past 90 days. Therefore, if the Bitcoin network continues to grow at an average rate of 0.66 EH/s per day, it will reach 1,000 EH/s or 1 ZH/s on or around November 28, 2025.

A zettahash is an astronomical figure, roughly 1 sextillion (1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000) hashes per second of SHA256 power. To put it into perspective, that’s close to the estimated number of stars in the observable universe. In computing, a sextillion bytes equates to one zettabyte (ZB), a figure that’s increasingly relevant as global data surges. By next year, Bitcoin too will be dealing in numbers of this scale.

As Bitcoin edges closer to the zettahash era, the network’s immense computational growth showcases the expanding global commitment to this decentralized technology. With each new hashrate peak, Bitcoin strengthens its security and resilience, drawing the network nearer to an unprecedented scale of processing power. The shift hints at an evolving digital landscape that aligns with these astronomical numbers.
