Nepalese actress being investigated for involvement in crypto scam

Crypto scam counts are rising as the industry is getting mainstream over the past few years. Recently, Napalese police were found investigating actress and model Priyanka Karki. The authorities have questioned her after her picture was found in promotional material for a digital assets scam. However, the police have underscored that the investigation is still underway and they are trying to find out if the actress is somehow involved in the cryptocurrency trading promotion or if the malicious players have used her picture to do so.

Priyanka Karki questioned in connection with a crypto scam

Nepalese police questioned actress Priyanka Karki. According to reports, the actress was questioned by the nation’s Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) about any possible connection with a crypto scam.

The authorities brought Karki in for questioning after they found a crypto ad with her picture on Facebook. However, the CBI released heer on bail this weekend. But the police say that the investigation is still ongoing and so they have seized her mobile phone for investigation.

Dhiraj Pratap Singh, Nepal CBI Deputy Inspector General (DIG) explained that the agency began to investigate the scam after witnessing cryptocurrency promotional content with her picture. He further added that the investigation is still underway. The bureau is trying to find whether the actress is involved in the promotion or only her picture was used.

After bail, Karki told her fans that she went to police seeking their support after finding out her pictures were being used in promotional content.

Scams using celebrity images is rising

Crypto scam with the image and name of celebrities in promotional content without their authorization is skyrocketing. According to reports, last week, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) filed a lawsuit against Mark Zuckerberg, the owner of Meta, the firm behind Facebook for publishing scam advertisements featuring prominent Australian public figures.

On the other hand, crypto trading is banned in Nepal. The Nepalese government reportedly instructed the Nepal telecommunications Authority (NTA) to  shut down all websites and applications related to cryptocurrencies.
