The US Department of Justice has launched legal action against the founders of Samourai Wallet, accusing them of operating a cryptocurrency mixing service that facilitated over $2 billion in illicit transactions.

Arrests have been made, with CEO Keonne Rodriguez and CTO William Lonergan Hill facing charges. Allegations include conspiracy to commit money laundering and operating an unlicensed money transmitting business.

This marks a significant development in regulators’ efforts to curb illicit financial activities facilitated by cryptocurrency platforms.

Samourai Wallet, founded in 2015, offered privacy-enhancing features aimed at obfuscating transaction origins, enabling criminal activity according to prosecutors.

The DOJ alleges that the platform knowingly facilitated large-scale money laundering and sanctions evasion, concealing criminal proceeds worth over $100 million.

Despite the company’s past criticism of government regulations infringing on user privacy, these legal actions underscore ongoing regulatory scrutiny of cryptocurrency platforms and their developers.
