Axie Infinity developers, Sky Mavis, have been on a mission, inaugurating a new variant of its game, ‘Axie Infinity: Origins’, to the Apple App Store.

Quick Takes:

  • Sky Mavis creates a new version of Axie Infinity: Origins for the Apple App Store, initiating gameplay without NFT characters to comply with Apple’s policies.
  • Marking a first for Apple, Sky Mavis integrates externally purchased NFTs into the game, transforming additional Axies bought in-app into unique digital assets.
  • Utilizing Ronin alongside the Apple release, Sky Mavis debuted Mavis Market, an NFT marketplace.

Axie Infinity’s Apple Expansion

In the past, Axie Infinity: Origins required players to purchase NFTs to enhance gameplay, first providing players with free NFT starter characters. However, following Apple’s requirements, the recently launched version of the card game for Apple App Store does not require using such digital assets.

Following a two-year-long communication and plenty of variations to become Apple-legible, the developers have rolled out a lite version of Axie Origins, claiming that this is the first time Apple has approved an externally purchased NFT for use on its App Store:

1/ Origins has passed review with Apple and is now available on the App store!

We believe this is the first time that Apple has agreed to make an externally-purchased NFT usable on the App Store.

Players can kick-start the game with non-NFT Axies as their digital characters. The initial characters will continue not being NFTs. Still, as players purchase additional Axies within the app, the team behind Sky Mavis hopes Apple will change its mind about transforming the cute characters into non-fungible collectibles.

The game functions on the Ronin sidechain, Sky Mavis’s Ethereum-based proprietary technology. Utilizing Ronin alongside the Apple release, Sky Mavis debuted Mavis Market, an NFT marketplace for purchasing Axies and Doll Sidekick.

Origins were initially available in select regions via the Google Play store and Sky Mavis’s platform ‘Mavis Hub’. Critical markets in Asia and Latin America (Argentina, Colombia, Peru, Mexico, Venezuela, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Vietnam) can now enjoy the game on the App Store.

This move underscores how adaptability and innovation can overcome Web2 and Web3 challenges, signifying a pivotal movement in NFT-based gaming.
