The low costs and near-instant finality of Lightning position it as a suitable solution for the small, repeated, high-frequency payments that autonomous software will generate as agents begin to act on behalf of people. Block described Lightning as a tool designed for “instant, low-cost, high-volume payments”, the exact profile that machine-to-machine commerce demands.

How x402 Lets Software Pay for Itself
x402 operates through the HTTP 402 “Payment Required” response, the mechanism that allows a server to request a payment mid-interaction. When an AI agent calls a paid API, retrieves a dataset or accesses a digital service, the server can return payment instructions on the spot. The agent pays and resubmits its request with the proof of payment attached, with no need to set up an account, enter a card or manage a prepaid API key.
The protocol is designed to be blockchain-agnostic, with compatibility for EVM chains, Solana and traditional payment methods, and is managed under the Linux Foundation. Its members include Google, Amazon Web Services, Coinbase and the Solana Foundation.

Block’s Strategic Bet on Lightning
Steve Lee, who leads Spiral, Block’s Bitcoin development arm, framed the contribution in the following terms. “Bringing Lightning to x402 is a step toward making Bitcoin everyday money, both for people and for the agents acting on their behalf,” he stated. “We will help the industry build more services on top of this.“
The x402 Foundation reports 75.41 million transactions and $24.24 million in volume over the last 30 days, with stablecoin payments as the predominant use case. Lightning adds a Bitcoin rail alongside those dollar-pegged tracks, giving developers an option that settles in BTC with greater liquidity and the strongest settlement guarantees in the crypto ecosystem.
Block’s contribution can be understood less as a one-off integration and more as a move to position Bitcoin within the payment infrastructure being built around AI agents. The company already operates Square and Cash App, and Dorsey has made Bitcoin a strategic pillar of the business for years.
