Binance founder and former CEO Changpeng Zhao (CZ) has issued a new statement addressing criticism of his “buy and hold” investment strategy, emphasizing that this approach is not applicable to all tokens.
Zhao stated that the “buy and hold” strategy, frequently mentioned in the crypto market, is often misunderstood and taken out of context.
In a previous post, Zhao stated that he had seen many trading strategies over the years, but very few had surpassed the simple “buy and hold” approach, and that he himself had predominantly adopted this strategy. This statement was interpreted by some investors as an unconditional recommendation for all crypto assets and was criticized.
Responding to the criticism, Zhao emphasized that this strategy does not automatically apply to every token. “If you were to buy every cryptocurrency ever issued, the performance of your portfolio would be clear,” Zhao said, noting that it’s similar to investing in the internet or artificial intelligence sectors.
According to Zhao, as in every sector, the vast majority of projects in the crypto world fail, while only a small minority deliver extraordinary returns in the long term.
Zhao therefore emphasized that asset selection is critical when investors implement a “buy and hold” strategy. He stated that projects with strong fundamentals, real-world use cases, and sustainable ecosystems should be preferred for long-term success.
Market experts also note that Zhao’s statements remind us that even passive strategies in crypto investments require informed choices. The statement is considered a significant warning, especially for new investors, against the “every token is worth holding” mentality.
