Cloudflare, one of the largest internet connectivity companies, has taken its first steps to capture the growing artificial intelligence (AI) agentic payment market. The company has revealed that it is working to launch Net Dollar, a stablecoin built from the ground up to power payments originated by AI agents.
Net Dollar seeks to power use cases driven by the growing adoption of agents on the internet, which include the automation of payments that would otherwise be made using regular rails. The company acknowledges that for this transition to happen, the underlying financial system needs to mutate and accommodate this new system.
Matthew Prince, co-founder and CEO of Cloudflare, recognizes this need and states that the net will be led by “pay-per-use, fractional payments, and microtransactions—tools that shift incentives toward original, creative content that actually adds value.” Net Dollar seeks to easily satisfy these use cases, offering the infrastructure to support these operations.
Cloudflare states will be backed 1:1 with U.S. dollars, and aims to execute payments easily, even across borders. Another feature of Net Dollar would be the ability to process transactions instantly, enabling use cases like booking a flight or ordering an item when it goes on sale, leveraging the programmability and versatility of AI agents.
Finally, Cloudflare expects this functionality to unlock a new business model for creators, developers, and AI companies, coming from agent-powered interactions.
Cloudflare and Coinbase recently partnered to launch the x402 Foundation, an institution that seeks to promote the adoption of the x402 protocol, enabling agents to transfer value within the current internet environment. Practical uses would include automatic payment requests and tipping for interesting content, eliminating common barriers shared by traditional payment rails.
