LibertyX has announced a new partnership with Desert ATM which should see its network of Bitcoin ATMs expand significantly. The Boston-based company will be operating a further 90 machines.

LibertyX is a software development company that creates the code necessary for a specific brand of cash-dispensing ATM, Genmega, to link up to the Bitcoin network. This allows users to buy and sell BTC with a credit or debit card. Back in January, the firm was granted a BitLicense from New York's Department of Financial Services (NYDFS), allowing them to offer their services in the state.

DesertATM currently operates around 250 cash machines, primarily in Arizona and Nevada, located in gas stations and retail stores, amongst other locations. 90 of these will soon be updated to have Bitcoin functionality.

In an interview with ATM Marketplace, Desert ATM owner Dan Laitala explained the partnership. "I download the software from the Genmega website and go around to my machines and upload the latest version. Not all Genmegas have LibertyX. We do some extra programming, so the machine can talk to the banks and the transactions go through...There is no software cost for Liberty. And because I own the hardware, I get a small transaction fee".
