A Familiar Onchain Signal
Blockchain trackers spotted the movement, noting that a wallet received 167,855 $ETH, worth about $408 million, from multiple addresses and has been steadily funneling it into exchanges. Over the past two days alone, the whale deposited 70,739 $ETH (roughly $174 million at current prices) while still holding onto 97,115 $ETH, worth close to $237 million, that hasn’t moved yet.
Consolidating funds from multiple wallets before sending them to exchanges is a common onchain signature for entities preparing to sell in size. However, this is just conjecture at this point, as there are many other options available to the owner as well (i.e. some wallets move funds to exchanges for custody reasons, collateral, or over-the-counter settlement).
Divide the reported dollar figures by the $ETH amounts, and the implied price sits close to $2,430 per coin, roughly in line with where ether has traded through late August. What this means is that whoever holds this position received the bulk of it from different wallets, suggesting accumulated exposure.
