The Ethereum Foundation has reportedly received a “voluntary enquiry from a state authority,” according to a note added to the group’s Github page.
State Actors Have Contacted the Ethereum Foundation; SEC Reportedly Investigating
On Wednesday, March 20, 2024, the crypto community discussed a message posted to the Ethereum Foundation’s Github repository which also features a warrant canary notice. The update is published to a commit that states:
This commit removes a section of the footer as we have received a voluntary enquiry from a state authority that included a requirement for confidentiality.
The commit also says a “Canari Bird Icon” was removed with text that also discloses:
The Ethereum Foundation (Stiftung Ethereum) has never been contacted by any agency anywhere in the world in a way which requires that contact not to be disclosed. Stiftung Ethereum will publicly disclose any sort of inquiry from government agencies that falls outside the scope of regular business operations.
The foundation’s X account has not posted since March 18 after it reposted a post from Ethereum Core developer Tim Beiko. Following the news, ETH is down 2.7% during the past day and due to the overall market downturn, ETH has lost 18.4% against the U.S. dollar this week.
Additionally, on Wednesday, Fortune disclosed that the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) is purportedly probing entities related to Ethereum. The investigation centers on the question of whether ether constitutes an unregistered security.
