New York and Hong Kong – Scroll, the open-source Ethereum scaling solution, has officially launched its mainnet, representing a major leap in Ethereum scalability and developer adoption.

The mainnet release follows two years of meticulous development and testing, during which zero-knowledge (zk) proofs were employed to offload computation from the Ethereum blockchain. As Ethereum usage grows, the network can slow down and become costly.
ZK proofs provide an innovative solution, significantly boosting transaction throughput, speeding up transactions, and reducing costs, marking a pivotal moment in Ethereum's scalability.
Scroll's unique bytecode-level Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) compatible zkEVM ensures an almost identical experience to Ethereum, allowing developers to migrate their existing projects seamlessly without altering the codebase. Scroll prioritizes Ethereum's security and decentralization while enhancing scalability.
"At Scroll, we take security extremely seriously. We maintain a dedicated internal security team, thoroughly audit our codebase with multiple firms, and remain open-source."
Haichen Shen, co-founder of Scroll
The mainnet launch comes after a year of successful testnets, with over 55 million transactions on Alpha and Beta testnets and nearly a million batches finalized to Layer 1. The most recent testnet, Sepolia, recorded over 900K wallet addresses and over six million transactions in two months. Over 100 projects have deployed on Scroll testnets, spanning infrastructure, DeFi, gaming, and more.
Scroll's mainnet provides users and developers with the same Ethereum experience, powered by zero-knowledge cryptography. It will initially focus on onboarding infrastructure providers and then enable global developers to build Web3 products, attracting new users to the Ethereum community.
Sandy Peng, co-founder of Scroll, envisions a future where most value transfers occur on Ethereum Layer 2s, driven by improved user and developer experiences: "We focus on enabling developers to build blockchain applications that will anchor Web3 in real-world use cases, attracting new users en masse."
Scroll, established in 2021, aims to build an open-source, scalable ecosystem with zkEVM capabilities while preserving Ethereum's security and decentralization. Their upcoming milestones include a decentralized prover network and decentralized sequencer.
For over two years, Scroll has collaborated with the Ethereum Foundation's Privacy and Scaling Explorations (PSE) group, contributing to the upstream PSE zkEVM codebase. Scroll's commitment to openness and research in ZK circuits, cryptography, and hardware acceleration has driven its growth.
