Shortly after Ethereum’s Merge upgrade was completed in the early hours of September 15, i.e. the Ethereum network switched from proof-of-work (PoW) to proof-of-consensus (PoS), several influential Bitcoin maximalists (or “maxis” for short) expressed their reaction to this event.
Ethereum creator Vitalik Buterin called this successful upgrade “a big moment for the Ethereum ecosystem, and naturally appeared delighted like the rest of the Ethereum community:
And we finalized!

Happy merge all. This is a big moment for the Ethereum ecosystem. Everyone who helped make the merge happen should feel very proud today.
And here's to the developers, client teams, researchers, and educators for their dedication to this major milestone. 👏 @benjaminion_xyz @mkalinin2 @ajsutton for educating so many, researching the Merge spec, and building @Teku_ConsenSys

However, several well-known Bitcoin maxis, who generally believe that — with the exception of fiat-backed stablecoins such as Tether ($USDT) — Bitcoin is the only legitimate cryptocurrency, were quick to express that they were not impressed by Ethereum’s move to PoS consensus.
Here are a few examples:

I can’t help but feel that the Ethereum Merge is their S2X moment. Where #bitcoin defended against a push for centralisation, Ethereum has failed.

The consequences will likely be felt some time down the road.
(See below for patronising Udi comment).
Etheruem has officially merged and moved towards PoS which means it will never be able to go carbon negative. #Bitcoin will achieve carbon negative status by the end of 2024.

Congrats on this. Seriously. @VitalikButerin pic.twitter.com/CfOoGwFl3p

Bitcoin advocate Udi Wertheimer criticized Bitcoin maxis for their attacks on Ethereum on Merge day:
They treat PoS the same way everybody else treated Bitcoin — no real effort to engage and understand. They just create or regurgitate propaganda that makes them feel right about something.

It’s absurd.
