New Move May Be Coming to Prevent Satoshi Nakamoto’s Bitcoins from Being Stolen!

Bitcoin Core developer Cory Fields has proposed three new mechanisms aimed at preventing potential $BTC thefts should quantum computers threaten the cryptographic security of the Bitcoin network in the future. The proposals aim to deter theft attempts that could be carried out using quantum technology by making attackers take on economic risk.

The Quantum Landmines, Staked Auction, and Sats Auction mechanisms proposed by Fields offer different approaches to protecting Bitcoins that may be vulnerable to quantum attacks.

The proposed system is based on the idea that, once quantum attacks become possible, individuals wishing to spend $BTC protected by older cryptographic methods would have to provide collateral equivalent to the amount of Bitcoin being traded. This would ensure that potential attackers risk only as much capital as the assets they aim to acquire.

Quantum Attackers’ Security Deposits Can Be Seized

The Quantum Landmines mechanism envisions Bitcoin holders protecting their assets with pre-created cryptographic proofs. Users who create this proof will be able to claim rights over the collateral deposited by the attacker in the event of a quantum attack.

The Staked Auction and Sats Auction mechanisms are specifically designed to deter attacks targeting Bitcoins whose private keys are believed to have been lost.

These systems envision third parties competing to obtain the attacker’s collateral. Thus, even if the original Bitcoin owner cannot access their assets, the attacker will still face a chance of financial loss.

A particularly noteworthy approach is adopted in the Staked Auction model. This design proposes that Bitcoins vulnerable to quantum attacks be permanently burned instead of being returned to their former owners.

The Search Continues to Find Solutions Against the Quantum Threat to Bitcoin

If quantum computers reach sufficient technological capacity, the possibility of breaking some of the public-key cryptography methods used by Bitcoin is among the risks discussed for the long-term security of the network.

Fields’ proposals suggest that this threat can be addressed not only through cryptographic changes but also by increasing the economic costs faced by attackers.

However, Fields added that these three mechanisms are still in the conceptual stage and that the technical implementation details need to be developed.
