Hong Kong’s long-term vision of establishing a crypto hub is taking a new turn with its latest push for digital gold. The city is now looking for ways to bring physical gold into the digital financial system. According to the latest reports, Hong Kong has proposed a gold-backed digital token that represents a standard 400-ounce gold bar. The gold token could be used for transactions between banks.
Hong Kong to launch a gold token
As part of Hong Kong’s digital hub vision, the city is now exploring a digital token backed by a 400-ounce gold bar. Financial institutions can use this interbank gold token for transactions. During Hong Kong FinTech Week, Financial Services and the Treasury Secretary Christopher Hui Ching-yu announced the proposal. Hui also added that “The government will also undertake an interbank tokenization project for gold transactions very soon.”
According to the announcement, the project would use Hong Kong’s HAU gold price reference. Via the proposed gold token, the city intends to make gold transactions easier with blockchain technology. While the movement of physical gold bars between financial institutions is risky and challenging, banks can move the digital tokens easily. Andrew Fei, a partner at King & Wood in Hong Kong, noted:
