The New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) is tapping Broadridge Financial Solutions (BR) to handle shareholder voting and other services for its planned tokenized stock trading platform, bringing a key Wall Street infrastructure provider into the project.

Broadridge will supply onchain governance and digital transfer agency services, helping public companies manage shareholder records, communications and voting as their stocks move onto blockchain rails, according to an announcement on Monday.

Another piece of the NYSE's tokenization plans is thus falling into place, connecting tokenized trading with the shareholder services public companies already use.

The exchange aims to bring stock trading onto blockchain networks, potentially allowing shares to change hands around the clock. But making that work requires more than trading technology. Companies still need to track who owns their shares, distribute dividends and let investors vote on corporate decisions. Broadridge is a giant in market plumbing, serving over 10,000 public companies across the globe and settling over $15 trillion in securities trades daily.

"Broadridge is building the governance layer for tokenized equities," CEO Tim Gokey said in a statement. “We’re also making it easier for issuers to participate by bringing our digital and traditional transfer agency services and proxy voting capabilities together in one solution — regardless of how shares are traded or where they are held.”

Broadridge will connect tokenized shares with proxy voting, shareholder communications and verified ownership records. Investors will be able to vote through supported digital wallets, brokerage platforms or Broadridge's existing ProxyVote service.

Transfer agents play a key role in this process, maintaining shareholder records and tracking changes in ownership as securities change hands. Tokenization specialist Securitize (SECZ) and tZERO are also set to provide transfer agency services for the NYSE's platform, according to previous announcements.

Broadridge has also been expanding its blockchain business through its DLX tokenization platform and Distributed Ledger Repo network, which processes more than $360 billion in transactions daily, according to the company.

The NYSE is one of several Wall Street institutions building blockchain-based stock markets.

Rival Nasdaq is also developing its own tokenized securities infrastructure, including a partnership with Kraken's parent company to distribute blockchain-based shares globally. Both exchanges are exploring how to bring tokenization into mainstream stock markets while preserving existing investor rights.
