Akash Opens Vote to Move From Cosmos to Solana

Akash’s core team has put Proposal 346 to $AKT stakers, seeking approval to leave its sovereign Cosmos-SDK blockchain and rebuild the decentralized computing marketplace as native programs on Solana, with a one-for-one $AKT token conversion.

The proposal is in its voting period. As of Oct. 26, Mintscan showed 98.25% support and turnout of 42.84% of bonded stake, above the 33.4% quorum. The onchain record sets the voting deadline at 10:02 a.m. ET on Nov. 2.

Approval would authorize the token launch, not immediately move the marketplace or running workloads. The marketplace cutover has no date and requires a separate governance vote after audits and migration rehearsals pass.

Akash’s GPU marketplace connects customers renting computing capacity with independent providers. In its case for Solana, the team argues that maintaining its own chain ties up $AKT in consensus security and consumes engineering resources. It says about 100 validators currently secure the chain; the proposed Solana programs would inherit security from Solana instead.

The team estimates marketplace network transaction fees on Solana at about 0.075 $SOL a day. That is a projected fee bill, rather than a measured saving against Akash’s current operating costs.

A One-Way Swap Before the Marketplace Moves

Under the proposal, $AKT would launch as an SPL token on Solana after two independent audits of the token and migration portal are complete, expected two to three weeks after passage. The one-way portal would stay open for two years from launch.

Holders would receive one SPL $AKT for each $AKT removed from circulation on the Cosmos chain, keeping total supply unchanged. Self-custody holders would connect a Cosmos wallet and select a Solana address; the proposal says no $SOL would be needed to migrate. Exchanges would move balances on their own schedules, while Console-managed wallets would migrate automatically. Tokens on Osmosis or other IBC-connected chains would first have to return to Akash’s chain.

For staked $AKT, the proposal specifies a portal transaction that starts unbonding, claims outstanding rewards and queues both for conversion after the 21-day unbonding period.

The later marketplace cutover would end old-chain inflation and staking rewards. Validators would still be needed during the wind-down, but their role and income would end when the old chain halts 90 days after cutover. Akash would also lose native IBC connectivity; subsequent Cosmos links would use third-party bridges.

Providers would upgrade their software and re-register on Solana. New deployments would move there at cutover, while existing leases could continue until the old chain halts, giving tenants 90 days to redeploy. Deployment configuration files would not change. Old-chain provider earnings and refunds of pre-cutover deposits would be paid weekly in SPL $AKT; top-ups made after cutover would not be credited on Solana.

Before the cutover vote, the team must publish how $AKT remaining on the old chain at halt would reach the portal, what happens to tokens not migrated within two years, the emissions curve and the size of a validator continuity payout.
