Why Abstract Is Winding Down
The team said growth stagnated because of a restricted DeFi ecosystem, thin on-chain liquidity, minimal institutional crossover, and a limited budget compared with competitors. Over the past 18 months the network had posted real milestones: more than 144 unique apps deployed, and the Abstract Global Wallet, which the team called the most adopted smart-contract wallet in crypto. Even so, after exploring options behind the scenes for about a year, Igloo concluded that operating a chain focused exclusively on consumer crypto was unsustainable as a standalone model, and it chose to wind the network down rather than keep spending on a chain that was not scaling.
What Users Need to Do
Holders can move assets through the Migration Hub at migrate.abs.xyz or the native bridge at native-bridge.abs.xyz, which carries a three-hour delay. The engineering and ecosystem team said it will help Abstract-based projects migrate to other chains, and it warned users to watch for impersonators, fake migration sites, and direct messages claiming to represent the project, telling them to cross-check any link against official Discord and other channels before connecting a wallet.
A Second Ethereum Layer 2 Shutdown in Days
The closure follows Blast’s plan to shut down its Ethereum Layer 2 by an October 26 deadline, marking the second Ethereum scaling network in a week to call it quits. Abstract had previously posted 105,000 active addresses shortly after launch, a metric that signaled strong early traction but did not translate into a self-sustaining economy, underscoring how thin liquidity and weak institutional crossover can stall even well-known consumer chains.
