Circle has acquired a major blockchain patent portfolio from IBM. This is a move that gives the stablecoin issuer the largest blockchain patent holdings in the United States as it expands its push into onchain financial infrastructure.

The company said the acquisition includes more than 680 patent families and nearly 1,000 issued patents. The patents cover blockchain technology, banking, financial services, enterprise infrastructure, supply chain verification, and secure cloud operations.

Circle expands blockchain intellectual property

According to Circle, the acquisition strengthens its intellectual property position. Also, it supports the development of products including USDC, Circle Payments Network, Arc, and its growing suite of onchain financial services and AI-powered financial tools.

The company also said it plans to explore additional commercial opportunities with IBM.

Sarah Wilson, Circle’s General Counsel and Corporate Secretary, said intellectual property plays a key role in advancing the company’s mission to expand adoption of onchain financial infrastructure.

She added that IBM’s long history of technological innovation would help Circle develop infrastructure for global, internet-native finance.

Deal builds on Circle’s infrastructure strategy

IBM was among the earliest major technology companies to invest in enterprise blockchain, developing solutions for banking, trade finance, and supply chain applications over the past decade.

For Circle, the acquisition extends a broader strategy beyond stablecoins. In recent months, the company has expanded its payments infrastructure, launched enterprise blockchain products, and secured regulatory approvals to grow its role in digital financial services.

The newly acquired patents span technologies used across financial services, insurance, enterprise infrastructure, and secure cloud operations. This gives Circle access to intellectual property developed during IBM’s years of blockchain research.

Circle becomes leading U.S. blockchain patent holder

Circle said the acquisition makes it the largest holder of blockchain patents in the United States, strengthening the foundation for its long-term development of internet-native financial infrastructure.

The company did not disclose the financial terms of the transaction.

Circle shares climb during Monday’s session

Circle shares traded 4.84% higher at $65.38 during Monday’s trading session following the announcement. Trading volume stood at 2.54 million shares, while the stock remained well below its May highs despite the day’s gains.

Technical indicators suggested momentum was improving. The daily Relative Strength Index [RSI] rose to 45.01. However, it remained below the neutral 50 level, indicating the broader trend has yet to turn decisively bullish.
