FIFA, the world’s leading football organization, is taking its interest in digital assets and Web3 technologies one step further by announcing the creation of its own Layer-1 (L1) blockchain network built on Avalanche’s infrastructure.
The upcoming FIFA Blockchain will be a customizable L1 chain based on Avalanche’s proprietary infrastructure, also known as a subnet. This development closely follows the recent Avalanche9000 upgrade, which aims to attract more developers and facilitate enterprise-level blockchain applications.
FIFA’s Previous Blockchain Initiatives
This move is not FIFA’s first entry into the blockchain space. Back in 2022, just ahead of the Qatar World Cup, FIFA launched an $NFT collection via the Algorand network. In April 2024, FIFA signaled its intention to migrate that collection to an EVM-compatible blockchain, while reaffirming its commitment to broader Web3 initiatives.
