Singapore have begun offering certificates for graduating students in the form of digital certificates.
Education Minister Ong Ye Kung has announced that tamper-resistant digital certificates will be distributed from this year to students graduating from secondary schools, junior colleges, and tertiary institutions, reports Channel News Asia.
The new blockchain-based platform, is a national-level initiative featuring SkillsFuture Singapore, Government Technology Agency, Ministry of Education and Ngee Ann Polytechnic. The platform looks to offer an easier and more reliable way to issue and validate certificates that will be tamper-resistant.
Ong Ye Kung commented on the latest initiative, saying “With OpenCerts, we are harnessing the power of blockchain in a practical way,” he said. “It allows for any education institute to issue OpenCerts, and for anyone to quickly check the validity of a digital certificate.”
The process also looks to speed up the process of giving graduates their certifications as previously, certificates needed to be verified by several sources and stamped before being posted out to graduates.
This is a major step in the countries attempt to push blockchain adoption in a more practical manner and could be a benchmark for future countries to follow in the future.
