Stronger US factory activity complicates Bitcoin’s hopes for lower rates

U.S. manufacturers’ production gauge reached its highest reading since November 2021 in October, giving Bitcoin investors a stronger growth signal alongside persistent factory cost pressure. The combination could complicate the case for easier U.S. interest rates even as firmer activity could support appetite for risk.

The Institute for Supply Management’s report released November 2 put its production index at 59, up from September’s 56.7. The headline manufacturing PMI rose to 55.5 from 54.5, marking a tenth consecutive month of expansion in the survey.

The prices index moved in the opposite direction, falling to 75.2 from 77.9. That is a meaningful counterweight to the stronger production reading: raw-material price increases became less widespread. Yet October still marked the 25th consecutive month of rising raw-material prices.

These are diffusion indexes, which measure the breadth of monthly changes across respondents. The production milestone concerns a survey reading, not the physical level of factory output. Likewise, the prices index measures how widespread increases are, rather than the inflation rate.

Production strengthens. Factory costs still rise.

ISM’s October production index rose as its prices index eased. The combination leaves Bitcoin with competing growth and funding signals.

Stronger activity could support risk appetite. Continued cost increases could constrain rate relief; neither channel establishes Bitcoin’s price response.

The production milestone refers to an index, not physical output. The prices index fell while raw-material prices still rose. Bitcoin channels are analytical possibilities, not measured effects. The Fed held rates; two dissents did not enact a hike.

What the Fed split means for Bitcoin

The Federal Reserve held its target range at 3.75%–4% on October 28, citing strong economic activity and elevated inflation. The decision passed 10–2, with Lisa D. Cook and Beth M. Hammack preferring a quarter-point increase.

A 2023 IMF working paper found that Fed tightening reduces a common crypto-price factor through the risk-taking channel, meaning changes in investors’ willingness to hold risky assets. That historical result helps explain why the rate outlook matters for crypto.

For the rates outlook, the next distinction is whether investors expect borrowing costs to stay high. Firmer expectations for short-term rates would reinforce the restrictive-funding interpretation; falling yields alongside resilient Bitcoin demand would weaken it.
