Bitcoin’s latest chart signal looks a lot like the ones before its big crashes

Bitcoin’s BTC$76,613.13 chart is flashing a red signal, similar to the one seen before February and June price crashes.

The signal comes from the Guppy Multiple Moving Average, or GMMA, an indicator built by trader Daryl Guppy and widely tracked in markets for gauging near-term and long-term trends. The GMMA plots two bundles of moving averages, which are the average price over a set number of days. One bundle uses short periods and the other uses long periods.

On bitcoin’s daily chart, the price has dropped below both bundles, and the short-term bundle has slipped below the long-term one. According to Guppy, that is a warning of a developing bearish shift in momentum.

The logic is simple. The short-term bundle represents what traders are thinking, while the long-term bundle shows investor sentiment. When the short-term bundle crosses below the long-term one, it is a sign that traders are now selling.

But a cross alone is not enough because trader sentiment can turn quickly. What confirms the signal is whether the long-term bundle is turning the same way as the short-term bundle.

As of now, it is for bitcoin. The red lines of the long-term bundle are squeezing together and beginning to slope lower. It shows investors are settling on a price and no longer buying aggressively.

With traders and investors now leaning the same way, the bearish signal is stronger.

A similar setup in late May was followed by a sharp crash to below $60,000 in the first week of June. The crossover in late January also paved the way for a drop from roughly $90,000 to around $62,000.

As always, the indicator is not fully reliable on its own, and it has had its share of losses. For instance, the bearish signals in August and September 2025 failed. The bearish confirmation came, but prices quickly turned higher.

That said, the latest bearish development comes alongside sharp ETF outflows and other signs of weakening US demand, as well as demand for downside protection in options. This suggests traders are rushing for the exit or preparing for deeper price losses.

Seasonality, however, is positive, and past data shows bitcoin tends to rally after the midterms.

All in all, the next few days should show which side wins.
