Metaplanet, Asia’s largest public holder of Bitcoin, has moved 5,014 $BTC between its custody wallets. As Bitcoin treasury companies are increasingly offloading their $BTC holdings, Metaplanet’s recent move has sparked speculation about a similar sell-off.

However, CEO Simon Gerovich clarified that the $BTC transfer was just a routine custody operation. He confirmed that no coins have been sold, with the platform continuing to hold around 43,000 $BTC. This clarification comes amid the market’s growing concerns about rising Bitcoin selling pressure.

Metaplanet clarifies $322M Bitcoin transfer

On August 13, 2026, Metaplanet CEO Simon Gerovich took to X to clarify the company’s latest Bitcoin transfer. Reportedly, the Bitcoin treasury company moved 5,014 $BTC, worth around $322 million, over a 24-hour period.

This huge Bitcoin transfer caught the market’s attention, with the community members discussing a possible liquidation event. But dismissing these speculations, Simon Gerovich stated, “No bitcoin was sold, and our holdings remain 43,000 $BTC.” He added:

This was a routine custody operation…All of our addresses are published, which is why the transfers were observable in real time. Total network fees to move $322 million in bitcoin: approximately $8.”

Metaplanet expands its $BTC strategy

Currently, Metaplanet is the third-largest Bitcoin treasury company in the world and the biggest in Asia. The company continues to stand firm in its Bitcoin strategy without dumping its holdings even when other industry giants are reducing their $BTC exposure.

Driven by the prevailing negative sentiment surrounding the Bitcoin price, which has already fallen by more than 50% from its all-time high of $126k, Metaplanet is now facing an unrealized loss of around $1.4 billion on its $BTC portfolio.

Despite this loss, the company continues to expand its Bitcoin-focused strategy. In March 2026, it launched Metaplanet Ventures with a 4 billion yen ($25 million) commitment to invest over the next two to three years. According to reports, the project will focus on crypto projects in Japan. In addition, as part of its long-term Bitcoin strategy, Metaplanet recently acquired Siiibo Securities.

While the Bitcoin treasury currently holds 43,000 $BTC, Metaplanet’s ambitions are much higher. The company aims to hold 100,000 $BTC by the end of 2026 and 210,000 by the end of 2027. If the company achieves these targets, it could significantly strengthen its position in the global crypto space.

Bitcoin treasury companies are selling $BTC

Amid prolonged crypto market volatility, Bitcoin treasury companies are under increasing pressure. As companies like Strategy and MARA continue to face significant unrealized losses, they are significantly reducing their exposure.

As we reported recently, Strategy sold about 1,690 $BTC for $108.6 million. This followed another major sale of 1,638 $BTC at a loss. Commenting on this strategy, CEO Phong Le noted, "At the point where selling Bitcoin versus selling equity to pay a dividend is better for our bitcoin-per-share, we will do it.”

MARA has also reduced the size of its Bitcoin treasury. It sold about 15,000 coins for $1.1 billion earlier this year. In the first half of 2026, the company dumped around 23,093 coins. This indicates that major Bitcoin treasury companies are increasingly rebalancing their portfolio amid the market correction.
