MetaMask has taken another major step in its multi-chain strategy by rolling out native Bitcoin support, broadening the scope of what is traditionally known as Ethereum’s most popular wallet.

With the latest update, MetaMask users can now purchase bitcoin using fiat, send and receive $BTC directly on the Bitcoin network, and swap $BTC against EVM-based assets and Solana tokens—all without leaving the app. The move marks a significant shift for a wallet that has historically been centered on Ethereum and EVM-compatible chains.

The Bitcoin integration lands amid a rapid series of product launches from MetaMask, which operates under Consensys. Recent additions include a Polymarket onramp, the introduction of the mUSD stablecoin, and in-app perpetuals trading powered by Hyperliquid. Together, these features point to MetaMask’s ambition to become a unified gateway for onchain activity across multiple ecosystems.

MetaMask first signaled its multi-chain direction earlier this year, beginning with Solana support and outlining plans to add Bitcoin by the third quarter. The wallet has also expanded into payments with a physical MetaMask Card, powered by Consensys’ Linea layer-2 network.

At launch, Bitcoin support will focus on native SegWit addresses, with Taproot compatibility expected to follow. Consensys has previously hinted at broader Bitcoin-related ambitions, citing interest in Lightning, ordinals, BRC-20 tokens, and Bitcoin layer-2 networks such as Stacks and Rootstock.

The update comes as Consensys prepares for a potential IPO and MetaMask moves closer to launching its long-anticipated $MASK token. In October, the company previewed a large-scale rewards initiative, featuring more than $30 million in LINEA incentives. Users who swap into $BTC via MetaMask will now earn MetaMask Rewards points, tying Bitcoin activity directly into the wallet’s growing incentive ecosystem.

While the timeline for the $MASK launch remains unconfirmed, Consensys CEO Joseph Lubin has said development is actively underway—underscoring that MetaMask’s expansion beyond Ethereum is far from over.
