Vitalik Urges Trustless Tech as WLFI Token Drops 5%

Ethereum’s co-founder Vitalik Buterin recently made a speech on the significance of trustless ecosystems. This happened as World Liberty Financial ($WLFI) tumbled 4.75% in the day due to governance issues among others. Tron blockchain Founder , Justin Sun, is now pursuing sanctions over the $WLFI ecosystem, after a jurisdiction change rendered his previous lawsuit moot. These events also coincide with Democrats now gaining majority control in the last half of Trump’s term, something that might could highly impact sentiment around $WLFI.

Sun seeks $WLFI Sanctions as Democrats Celebrate Wins

In April 2025, Sun sued the Trump family crypto venture $WLFI in a California federal court. He claimed fraud, saying the project froze $45 million worth of $WLFI tokens. He adds that this happened even while he was one of the earliest and largest investors in the DeFi protocol.

At the time of initiating the lawsuit, the project was described as a Florida citizen only.

However, Sun claims that the legal disagreement pushed it to amend its filings, now listing 22 owners spread across Florida, Delaware, Puerto Rico, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The move deems $WLFI foreign and effectively blocks any US federal jurisdiction over it. Sun is now seeking sanctions against the company and its lawyers, with future plans to refile the case in California state court.

While some of the crypto community sympathizes with him, critics say it’s a classic case of a fraudster being defrauded. Others, however, say the funds went into minting USD1 – the stablecoin running the $WLFI ecosystem.

Ethereum’s Vitalik Buterin speaks about trustless ecosystems

The issue is one among many that shines a spotlight on one of the core subjects in the blockchain trilemma: decentralization. Coined by Buterin, the concept places decentralization, security, and stability as the core properties of a decentralized network. Achieving all three has proven challenging, with many projects faltering in at least one pillar.

Buterin recently revisited trust and ownership matters while speaking at Ethereum Foundation’s flagship event, Devcon 8 in Mumbai, India. He rooted for open-source code, cryptographic proofs (ZK proofs), and collaboration to reduce blind reliance.

Current state of US midterm elections

At press time, Democrats had won control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate in a major “blue wave” victory. The political flip was driven by voter dissatisfaction over the economy, the war with Iran, and the cost of living. The win now shifts the balance of power in Washington for the remaining two years of Trump’s presidency. During the celebrations, Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer vowed to “deliver for the people of America.”

$WLFI token reaction

The high-profile dispute initially caused rising interest in the $WLFI coin, with gains topping 2.31% to reach $0.05090. At press time, however, these gains had been erased, with the token falling 4.75% to trade at $0.04926. Other than the ongoing legal feud with Sun, the fact that Democrats might impeach Trump does little to help sentiment.

Even more, a cascade of long liquidations caused the token to fall as much as 8% in a single hour, triggering over $160,000 in long liquidations over major exchanges such as Binance, OKX and Bybit. It didn’t help that the protocol has navigated several security vulnerabilities, including the October 31 front-end security matter involving the StepDrainer toolkit.
