Millions of email addresses with accounts on prominent crypto price-tracking platform CoinMarketCap are being traded on hacking forums, according to a data breach-monitoring site.

Have I Been Pwned (HIBP) says that 3,117,548 email addresses associated with CoinMarketCap accounts have been circulating hacking forums since October 12th.

CoinMarketCap says to HIBP,

“CoinMarketCap has become aware that batches of data have shown up online purporting to be a list of user accounts. While the data lists we have seen are only email addresses (no passwords), we have found a correlation with our subscriber base.”

After a brief investigation, the company says that the leak did not originate from their own servers.

“At this point in our investigation, we’ve come to the conclusion that the leak did not come from CoinMarketCap servers.

As no passwords are included in the data we have seen, we believe that it is most likely sourced from another platform where users may have reused passwords across multiple sites.

We believe that a bad actor (or actors) took a list of leaked emails (this list that claims to be from CoinMarketCap) and compared it with other batches of leaked data.”

CoinMarketCap was first launched in 2013 and was acquired by crypto exchange giant Binance in April 2020.
