Malaysian Police Arrested Bitcoin Mining Criminals Red-Handedly

The Malaysian Police have arrested four criminals in the raid on seven shophouses in George Town, the city of Penang state. Also captures over 400 bitcoin mining machines.

The reports claim that the raid occurred between 11:30 pm to 3:00 am on Friday. Besides, four incursions occurred after questioning four suspects convicted earlier in the day during raids on three other properties in Jelutong.

Significantly, Assistant Commissioner (ACP) Soffian Santong states that the police unit from the district police headquarters, the state criminal investigation department, and Tenaga Nasional have undertaken the raids.

Crime on Other Operations

Soffian declares that the raid took place at Jelutong, Sungai Dua, Lintang Hajjah Rehmah, and Bayan Lepas; the authorities seized four computers, 11 routers, and 4 modems.

The actual report found that all four locations were stealing electricity to power bitcoin mining operations. Under further investigations, it is revealed that all suspects are cleaners and are working only for two months. 

Moreover, Malaysia’s multinational electricity company estimated losses of around RM420,000 or $102,239 due to electricity theft in the last two-months.

Consequently, this is not the first case discovered in Malaysia regarding Bitcoin Mining operations. The police are investing more in this case to catch the head of the team who has been working for months.

More so, Illegal bitcoin mining appears to be growing in popularity. A few weeks ago, police in the United Kingdom discovered a bitcoin mining warehouse that was reportedly stealing thousands of pounds in electricity. Unexpectedly, the illegal mining facilities were found while looking for a cannabis farm. At the time, police in the United Kingdom seized 100 bitcoin mining machines.
