Bitcoin is trading around $78,000, down 0.4% since midnight UTC and roughly 0.7% over the past seven days as the market consolidates following a short squeeze that drove prices from below $63,000 to a high near $81,400 last week.

The period of calm has not dented crypto's relative strength, however. Nasdaq 100 futures are down 0.5% since midnight, with bitcoin outperforming equities once again.

Spot bitcoin ETFs’ nine consecutive days of net inflows, attracting roughly $3.04 billion in the longest streak since April, came to an end on Friday with a $202 million outflow. It resumed Monday with $217 million in fresh inflows, according to SoSoValue data.

Altcoins are mixed since midnight, with the Altcoin Season index falling to 26/100 from 34 on Friday, the lowest reading in more than 90 days.

Derivatives positioning

  • Balanced positioning: The 24-hour taker buy-sell volume ratio for crypto futures markets remains balanced for the second straight day. Open interest (OI) has held steady near $136 billion, while volume has dropped 7%, suggesting traders are adding neither long nor short bets, and are instead waiting for a clearer directional cue.
  • $ARB leads gainers: The best-performing token among the top 100 over the past 24 hours is Arbitrum's $ARB, up nearly 30%. The rally is backed by rising futures participation, with open interest surging over 10%, a combination pointing to a buildup of long bets as the token tries to establish a foothold above chart resistance at 11 cents. The market doesn't look overheated, with annualized funding rates near 8%.
  • Monero OI continues to rise: Open interest in privacy-focused Monero futures continues to climb, with OI at 640,000 tokens, the highest since February 2024. The picture is mixed, though. On the positive side, funding rates have dropped to 15% from over 50%, indicating the market is no longer overcrowded with bullish bets. On the negative side, the 24-hour OI-adjusted cumulative volume delta (CVD) is negative, pointing to bearish leadership. XMR's price has already pulled back to around $525 from Monday's high of $548.
  • $TRX shorts in demand: Tron's $TRX stands out with funding rates at minus 80%. That signals overcrowding in bearish bets, with short sellers willing to bear a high cost to hold their positions. $TRX is down for a third straight day, trading near 33 cents.
  • $BTC, $ETH positioning light: Positioning in $BTC and $ETH remains light, with open interest hovering at multi-week lows.
  • Volatility cools: Bitcoin's and ether's 30-day implied volatility indexes, BVIV and EVIV, have reversed their mid-August spikes, pointing to market calm.
  • Options flow bullish: In Deribit-listed options, the $80,000 call expiring Sept. 25 is the most-traded bet of the past 20 hours. A call represents a bullish bet on the underlying asset. In ether's case, the $2,500 call has seen the most activity.

Token talk

  • Arbitrum’s surge is easily the standout across the altcoin sector. The driver is Robinhood Chain, which runs as a dedicated Arbitrum chain and sends 10% of net protocol revenue back to the Arbitrum ecosystem. Offchain Labs co-founder Steven Goldfeder said Monday that the chain's 24-hour transaction revenue had passed $2 million, up from around $1.22 million a day earlier. At that rate, Arbitrum's cut would equal roughly $73 million a year.
  • ARK Invest's Lorenzo Valente calculated that gross chain revenue on Robinhood Chain rose from $54,676 on Aug. 22 to $1.088 million on Aug. 30, close to a 20-fold increase, with Arbitrum's share scaling from $5,400 to $108,000 over the same stretch.
  • Curve DAO CRV$0.3586 climbed 14% over 24 hours to around 35.13 cents on $119 million in volume, part of the same DeFi bid that has lifted lending and DEX tokens through the back half of August.
  • Uniswap ($UNI) extended its run, rising 8% since midnight to around $5.80 after a 12% gain over the previous 24 hours. $UNI is now up 34% over the past seven days on $519 million in volume,
  • Among the day's smaller movers, aave AAVE$126.93 rose 1.9% to $126.54 and morpho MORPHO$2.5549 gained 2%, suggesting DeFi is holding up better than the broader market in Tuesday's session.
