Tim Clancy’s digital tokens: video game currency evolution

03 May 2018 21:00, UTC

Pennsylvania University graduate Tim Clancy has proposed to use Ethereum ERC-721 tokens in video games built on Unreal Engine. His project is called Palm and the founder views it as an experiment, while not excluding that video game developers would find even more sophisticated and optimized ways to use blockchain in video game payments in the future.

Many video games today have their own in-game currency usually converted from real money and sometimes acquired through various gaming activities or achievements. Gamers can buy new character skins and weapons for them. One of the popular games which may be applicable to Tim Clancy’s project is Fortnite, as it’s built on Unreal Engine and has its own V-Bucks.

While the use of Ethereum-based tokens has no obvious disadvantages, the use of Ethereum main blockchain does, as witnessed in the story of CryptoKitties overload (built on the same ERC-721 standard). The future technologies similar to Tim Clancy’s project may require a separate blockchain environment.

The University of Pennsylvania has previously been mentioned in the news connected with blockchain technologies. It plans to open blockchain-focused courses since the autumn of this year, and similar steps are being made by other universities, institutes and business schools.
