The Number of Public Nodes in Bitcoin Lightning Network Has Reached 10,000

27 September 2019 08:37, UTC

Amid the chaos in the cryptocurrency market, the number of public nodes in the Bitcoin Lightning Network has increased. According to 1ml site, the number of nodes has overcome the psychological barrier of 10,000, seeing an increase of 3.16% over 30 days. The total number of channels stands at 36,217.

The second layer scaling technology for Bitcoin is aimed at unloading the main blockchain by taking over the transactions and reducing the associated transaction fees. It is expected that transactions made in the Lightning Network will increase the usefulness of cryptocurrencies as a means of exchange and scale the blockchain's ability to conduct transactions.

Lightning Network was developed by Lightning Labs, and was beta-launched in in March 2018. It is worth noting that the figures went up a steep spring in less than a year, presumably in connection with the release of the Casa Lightning Node, which simplified the process of launching the node for ordinary users. This allowed the network to peak in March 2019. Further, the number of channels connecting nodes decreased, although insignificantly. The largest increase in network capacity was recorded in May 2019, after which the capacity began to decline.
