April Fools: Vitalik Buterin actually joked about limiting Ethereum supply

02 April 2018 21:00, UTC

“Note that the date of the proposal is April 1 - April Fools’ Day, but it seems serious and reasonable,” wrote Bitnewstoday in a message regarding the proposal of Vitalik Buterin to limit the coin supply of his creation - cryptocurrency called Ethereum. Well, it turns out that the prank of Vitalik Buterin has been successful. The author of the prank notes that 20% of the 1st April proposal was copied from Tron Network docs.

The media which thought the proposal was real include Coindesk, Bitcoinist and many others. This indicates how sometimes even the best of us fail to check the information on April Fools.

The famous coder also notes that the proposal might not necessarily be thrown into the garbage, however. If the community decides that the token emission limit is really worth it, it may implement it regardless of the fact if the original idea was a prank or not. Although he, for one, doesn’t really like it.

Ethereum’s structural enhancements and discussions about them are usually much more serious, with concepts and terms very difficult to understand at first sight. The probable red flag that it was a joke was the fact how swiftly Buterin abandoned the idea of unlimited tokens after years of supporting the concept.
