Mining virus called Digmine spreaded through Facebook Messenger

25 December 2017 21:00, UTC

Facebook Messenger meets mining viruses, which have become one of the biggest reasons cryptocurrency is connected with hackers and black market. This Digmine virus disseminates videos which actually turn out to be executable files, launching and infecting the user computers with a mining virus. This type of viruses hijacks the computer’s resources, considerably slowing down even simple processes. The one who is getting cryptocurrency is not the owner of the computer, but the virus developer.

The media also notes that if the victim’s user settings have the auto-authorization enabled and this user has Chrome, the virus takes advantage of this and adds another account to the legion of virus spreaders.

Mining viruses are not as formidable as ransomware - viruses which block the user data and demand ransom, usually in cryptocurrency, but they, too, have become an often topic of digital security websites. In this case, the mined cryptocurrency is Monero once again. Apparently, the algorithms of this altcoin meet hackers’ needs, because it is very often used in mining viruses. The recent attack on WordPress involved Monero as well, and the founders are unlikely to appreciate such use.
