Enigma startup hacked – $400,000 stolen from Catalyst accounts

20 August 2017 21:00, UTC

It seems that hackers don’t plan to leave cryptocurrencies alone – when they are not seeking ransom in cryptocurrency, as with the HBO case, they are hacking cryptocurrency companies, stealing funds from common people.

The latter case scenario happened with Enigma, a startup led the media lab from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Its Catalyst, a project with algorithmic trading and different investment and hedging opportunities, was hacked today. A message was posted on the official Twitter page of the Enigma project, warning its users of the hack and telling they must not send funds to any addresses right now.

This hack has stopped the ECAT tokens pre-sale process in the middle when unknown malefactors managed to hack the project website and withdraw funds totaling approximately to $400,000. These tokens are used to reward users and to unlock new premium options on the website.

Some consider this hack to be an inside job. Anyway, the funds were last seen transferred to an unknown ETH address that hackers used as a storage for stolen funds.
