Telegram sues American company over Gram brand

15 May 2018 21:00, UTC

A future token or, at least, a product made by Telegram will indeed be called Gram, as witnessed by the news shared throughout the technology-related media. Reportedly, the US-based firm Lantah LLC has tried to claim copyrights for the same brand because the popular messenger owner has not registered it in the corresponding organizations.

The Lantah LLC representative has stated it had not known about Durov’s future structure when it filed a trademark registration - which is strange considering that the description matches the functions of Telegram token. Telegram Messenger LLP management insists that “common law trademark rights” are applicable in this situation and points out the intentions of Lantah to make money on the reputation of the product they have not made. They have filed a case in the US District Court for the Northern District of California.

Gram is a cryptocurrency which has not been launched at the press time. According to observers and leaked documents, it will be a part of Telegram Open Network (TON) - a fundamental update for the cryptographically-enhanced Telegram. The public sale of the ICO of this product has been abandoned after two extremely successful stages of private sale. Data on at least one of the stages is described in the documents Telegram Messenger LLP has sent to the United States Securities and Exchange Commission - this happened because every company has to report business activities for the SEC in case the enterprise is connected to securities or tokens and has relations with American citizens.
